First Hijrah: Letter Submitted to the State Department

August 25, 2014
First Hijrah Foundation Organization of Ethio/American Muslims Washington Metro Area, submitted the following letter to U.S. Department of State.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield
Assistant Secretary, Bureau of African Affairs
U.S. Department of State
2201 C Street NW
Washington, DC 20520
Dear Madam Secretary,
We Ethio/Americans living in the Washington DC metro area, are outraged by the statement the Ethiopian Foreign Minister Dr. Teodros Adhanom gave to one local Ethiopian Amharic AM Radio station. On his interview of August 9, 2014, the foreign minister alluded that the reason the government imprisoned Ethiopian Muslims peace movement leaders is because of their connection with Guantanamo Bay (GTMO) prisoners. In order to justify this claim he mentioned the Ethiopian Government received intelligence information of their involvement from US government officials.
As far as we are concerned and as far as we know international Human Right organization such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and others including the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) as well as the 2013 State department reports on human rights on Ethiopia have acknowledged that the Ethiopian government is interfering in the religious affairs of the Muslims. Ethiopian Muslims peacefully demanded the government to stop imposing a religious ideology of its choice on them and according to the USCIRF Commissioner M. Zuhdi Jasser’s remarks he gave on Thursday February 14, 2013 before the Council of Foreign Relations on Religious Freedom Conditions in Ethiopia he said the following: “Between July 13 and July 21, it arrested all 17 members of the Arbitration Committee and nearly 1,000 protestors- although it did release all but 9 Committee members shortly thereafter. The government escalated this conflict when, on October of last year, it leveled specific charges against the protestors, charging 29 of them – including the 9 Arbitration Committee members it was still holding, with terrorism and attempting to establish an Islamic state. As of today, the government has presented no evidence to prove that any of these people are terrorists.”
Moreover, the government has a history of using the Anti-Terror Proclamation under which they were charged as a tool to silence independent journalists and political opposition leaders, rather than to combat terrorism.” (http://www.uscirf.gov)
Since the peaceful movement started 3 years ago, not a single rock was thrown while they are protesting and Ethiopian Muslims remained peaceful enduring all the hardship they went and are going through. Yet, the Ethiopian Government time and again was crying wolf by terrorizing the people and labeling the victims as terrorists.
Hundreds of peaceful people including the arbitration committee that were chosen by the masses to negotiate with the government to resolve the problem were thrown in prisons tortured and humiliated and charged with terrorism. As Americans of Ethiopian origin, we are very much amazed about the audacity of the Ethiopian foreign minister’s claim that the US government has provided the Ethiopian government the evidence connecting Ethiopian Muslims and the Guantanamo prisoners.
As the Ethiopian government tried and failed to create a rift and animosity between Muslims and Christians by spreading fear mongering propaganda, the intent the foreign minister’s remarks is yet another scare tactic -this time however, with a dangerous twist. The connection between Ethiopian Muslims and the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay and to claim the US government is the source of the information is nothing but a plot to associate US government to the repression that is going on in the Ethiopia. We as US citizens and legal residence of the United States of America can’t be silenced by such falsified remarks in implicating the US. We are determined to rectify and protect US’s stand among Ethiopian Muslims.
As we have played a positive role in advancing the peaceful coexistence among Ethiopians of different religious persuasions and Ethnic groups, we will continue to do our best in vigilantly watching the Ethiopian government heinous attempts of foment violence among the different religious persuasions and Ethnic groups.
However, we are wary of the Ethiopian government’s anti-democratic and anti-freedom actions that will inevitably push the people to go to the extreme that we all advise against. We urge the US government to apply its diplomatic pressures and democratic principles to bring change before Ethiopia falls into the chaotic situation of some of its neighbors.
Sincerely,
First Hijrah Foundation Organization of Ethio/American Muslims Washington Metro Area

Views on the anticipated Ethio-Eritrea war

August 25, 2014
by Tatek Menji
  • The main assumed reasons given for the will be Ethio-Eritrean war in the very near future are : (1) that TPLF wantsEthio-Eritrean war in the very near future to hunt down its armed oppositions in Eritrea (2) that TPLF wants to topple down Isayas Afeworki from power and substitute by TPLF groomed anti Isayas actors. Are these acceptable suppositions ? Aren`t the polit bureau of Shabia and the polit bureau of TPLF brothers? Is Shabia really a threat to TPLF? Is Shabia really disempowering the TPLF regime? Which formidable armed opposition/s being helped by Shabia against TPLF?
  • Regarding assumption (1) : let’s say that there are lightweight or heavy weight armed forces in Eritrea to become a threat to the TPLF regime. Can the TPLF uproot those armed forces simply by unleashing Ethio-Eritrea boarder war or by invading into the Eritrean territory up to Asmera, like that of the 1998-2000 war?
  • With regard to conjecture (2) : let`s consider that TPLF ousted Isayas and his top dogs from power and replaced by TPLF backed rival group/s as Georg Bush did to Iraq in 2003.Wouldn`t these- the above postulates contradict the International Law of sovereignty? “The principle of absolute or unrestricted power expressed either as the unchallengeable legal authority or unquestionable political power.” If this sovereignty principle is applicable-both number one and two above are rebukeable beliefs. Or as long as any given war is for the interest of the Western powers, the imperative of sovereignty is irrelevant?
America badly wants access to the Eritrean area of the Red Sea for its: geo-political, economic and military strategic importances.

The geo-political importance of the Red Sea

The Red Sea has a special strategic importance. The Red Sea is the heart of the area for linking and for serving as a bridge for the four worlds: Africa, the Middle East, the Far East and Europe
-The Red Sea is one of the main routes for oil and other trades to Europe and to the East
- It serves as a major trade outlet for its coastal States-Eritrea, Ethiopia (in the past),Sudan, Jordan and Israel
-It serves as a track of communication for the military forces between their home countries and their stations or bases in different locations of the world
-The Red Sea is a first class Sea passageway among world navigational routes, due to the larger percentage of unarmed oil tankers have had been transported through

The Economic importance of the Red Sea

-The Red Sea is rich in mineral deposit: zinc, copper, silver, gold, cadmium, cobalt, hydrocarbons, various marine lives, about 300 kinds of fish and beautiful coral reef that makes the Red Sea one of the best places for tourists and for diving
-Thanks to Melese Zenawi, he disowned us such strategic ports, with such indispensable underwater natural treasure/wealth. The bulk of Ethiopians including myself didn`t get the opportunity to see such precious, historical and heritage ports . What a great loss! What a sad loss to us!

The United States Strategy in the Red Sea

- The Red sea is the main sea highway to ship the Arabian Gulf oil to its Western Industrialized allies/nations
- The United States has stationed naval forces, aircraft carriers, destroyers, nuclear submarines etc in the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea in (Djibouti). The purposes of these bases are to protect U.S.interests in the Middle East, in the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea
- To counter Russia`s threat against its economic interest and security of the waterway of the U.S navigation and to
safeguard the Middle East and the Red Sea regions from any hostile foreign influence
- Ever since president Truman, the ‘security and the independence of Israel’ is one of all American presidents foreign policy priorities. Which means, the U.S concerns for the unrestricted pathway of the Israel`s navigation via the Red Sea
-The main reasons why the U.S currently looking for the Eritrean port/s : The revival of Russia against America`s interests and Iran`s naval significance in the Persian Gulf and its attempt into the Red Sea seems become a headache for America towards the Red sea region. Hints:
- In 2001,one year after the 9/11 the Al-Qaida attack,U.S demanded Eritrea to have a military base in the Red Sea port of Assab. As this news source stated, Mr.Afeworki rejected U.S`s request, saying that he doesn’t want to become a “tool in the hands of the Western military commands”
- 8 June 2011, Iran sent its Submarines into Red Sea the for the first time, being escorted by the Iranian navy 14th fleet warships. According to some anonymous analysts, Tehran wanted to send a tacit message that U.S can not contain or prevent Iran`s regional ambition. Iran says, if the U.S wants to avert a three decades of hostility,U.S must treat Iran as an equal.
-To intermediate him, the Western powers:(a) portrayed Isayas Afework as he had been empowering the Alshebabs and other terrorist elements in the Horn of Africa (b) in 2009, exercised the United Nations security Council Resolution (UNSC) 1907. Which means (imposed)- arms embargo, travel bans on Eritrea’s leaders and frozen the assets of some political military officials
-‘’Time to bring Eritrea in from the cold” by Hank Cohen. This apologetic article invited for the normalisation of relations among- Eritrea,Ethiopia, the UN and the U.S.It proposes: (1) Ethiopia to allow or give the disputed the border land/s to Eritrea (2) Ethiopia to have access to Assab port and use it for its trade need (3) UN to cancel sanction against Eritrea (4) make a deal for military cooperation between U.S and Eritrea. And Eritrea to join the U.S a war on terrorism in the Horn of Africa and across the Red Sea.
- In spite all those U.S`S efforts, Eritrea refused to bend to the United States way. To the contrary, as recently as 4 August 2014, Eritrea announced that it agreed strategic relationship with Russia, declared as “Eritrea is a part of Russia on strategic partnership”. To affirm this, one of Europe based Russia`s diplomat officiated that Russia ‘will be conducting military exercises in Eritrea soon this year’. Is it not the ‘grapes are sour’ for America? If this foreseeable Ethio-Eritrea war will break out as speculated, that will be for the interest of the Western powers – in particular for America`s interest. America and its allies may push the TPLF at least to capture port Assab with the pretext of a ‘chase for armed anti- TPLF oppositions. If the U.S and its interest sharing partners analysed and perceived it as a winnable move, the war will take place soon, prior to Russia commence military manoeuvre in Assab port.
Why would the TPLF betray their brothers` kingdom? As we all know, without America and its Western allies backing, the TPLF could have been perished from power long time ago. To rule Ethiopia further, the TPLF can and will sacrifices any commitment for its Godfathers` interest. “To ‘preserve power, tyrants do not hesitate to scarifies – their children, their wives, their parents, their brothers, their sisters, their wealth etc.”, in one of Lenin`s books that I read in the past. For despots, nothing surpasses their power. To mean, the TPLF can do anything to appease the U.S and it`s big allies.

The prospect of the war if it become materialised

-Suppose, the TPLF will triumph of capturing the Assab port- does it mean Ethiopia will have a guarantee to re-own Assab for an enduring future? I strongly doubt. Of course, It will serve : (1) for the United States and its confederates interests (2) for the forthcoming state of Tigray Republic. But it doesn’t mean the war will everlasting
- We would be naive, if we expect the war I am writing about shall bring favourable condition/s for the anti-TPLF political movement in Ethiopia. Why don`t we learn from 1998- 2000 Ethio-Eritrean war, instead, TPLF will use it to dwarf or overshadow its political opponents and human rights activists

The outlook of Russia`s presence in the Horn of Africa

-Firstly it will drive the U.S crazy or mad
-It may strengthen the neo- post cold war tension between the U.S and Russia
-It will prompt America to double- reinforcing its pupate states in the East and the Horn of Africa: Kenya,Djibout,Somalia, South Sudan, perhaps Somaliland (Hargeisa), in particular Ethiopia.
-North Sudan might tend to join Russia
-Could Russia`s positioning in the Horn of Africa- urge U.S to words democratising the TPLF regime? I don`t think so, unless and otherwise, the U.S see`s tangible and effective pro-U.S democratic political force/s that counterweigh or be alternative to TPLF

The Why and What Questions

I must confess, before I decided to write the article I had a little conversation with myself about why I should deal with this complex and elusive subject matter when too many people have too many opinions and perceptions, factual or otherwise. I also questioned myself if I really am entitled and rightful person to engage with this task. After contemplating the question for sometime I came to agreement with myself that as an Ethiopian I have every right to engage myself in any endeavor that concerns the nation. In so doing, based on my personal, educational and career experiences I will put forward the little I know to right the wrong, correct the incorrect and uncover the covert to create concrete evidence that would be the basis for rational decision and action. This article is forwarded with that in mind and with no sense of authority but rather deepest humility for being able to share my insights and findings with my fellow citizens.
Some might find it improper to include the Eritrean leader in the matter of Ethiopian affairs since it is exclusively Ethiopians only. However, we have to realize that as much as internal dynamics and forces shape and direct the political reality in Ethiopia it is also relevant to understand the impact and role of other interest groups. Specially, a country that has been one part of the Ethiopian territory until as recently as two decades ago there are many issues that are still unsettled and unresolved. Besides, new ones has also been created following the independence of Eritrea. So, addressing issues that relates to Eritrea would be pertinent in understanding the Ethiopian reality and the future of the region at large. But, I would like to remind all that it is not the intention of this writer to give opinion or evaluation about the Eritrean leader and his domestic and international policies. I have neither the will nor the right to do so. My attempt is just looking the region holistically with an attempt to deal with the realities in Ethiopia.
This piece has no intention of lionizing one and demonizing others. What it attempts to address simply is the relations ship and dynamics between the three entities so as to examine issues of friendship; cooperation; enmity; betrayal; deception and naivety with the hope of shedding light on the basic destructive and constructive underpinning factors. Why I put TPLF and Ethiopians as separate entities on the subject is due to my understanding of their difference of opinion on many issues and policies, including the difference on matters as big as what Ethiopian interest really is. That is what made it so difficult for me to put them in one category or regard them as the same entity. As much as there are differences of opinion between TPLF and Isayas Afeworki, there is the same level of differences between TPLF and Ethiopians despite they are in one politically defined area called Ethiopia.
We are a rational being who should have the capabilities to decipher facts from fiction to make an informed decision based on reasoning and analysis. That is exactly why I took the liberty to address the subject that had in fact been inexplicable for me for a long time. As much as it is true that my point of view and explanations create positive reaction from some it is also expected to create some non-smiley faces in some quarters. No matter what the effect, however, the beauty of freedom of expression is all about saying what you believe is right and put it in the open for everybody to see and judge. This is a beautiful and healthy discourse that no human being should be restricted from exercising anywhere, including Ethiopia and Eritrea. And for me personally, being able to speak loud what I have inside with no fear of retribution from any authority means a lot. And truly, that is my American Dream nothing more can substitute. Specially, when you know people are jailed, tortured and abused for exercising this right you feel more convinced of its importance and that drives you to do more.
This article underscores one fundamental principle, not all that we see and hear is what it is until we make our own investigation and careful observation that would help us reach the truth by refuting politically motivated and patronizing information of others. Specially, in politics where politicians are mostly concerned about how to achieve their goal while being less concerned what means they use it is imperative to find our own truth rather than being treated as buffoons who take all make believes than the facts on the ground. All sorts of tactics are put in place by politicians just so they accomplish their personal or group agenda disregarding moral, societal and even legal boundaries. What this article meant to achieve is one thing, to address the subject matter in a different light in an attempt to uncover the facts and erase the delusions created by politicians. In doing so, I attempt to investigate the dead past and explain the paralyzed present so as to breath life on the future by recommending some ideas and direction for actions that would hopefully be used to redeem the nation and the region.

The Ethiopians delusion; identifying the source

For a person like me who did not pass the age of fourteen when TPLF became a government it is easy to be co-opted growing up with the lies and deceptions propagated through the two state controlled Medias, ETV and Ethiopian radio. On top of that, the entire time TPLF has been ruling the nation for the last twenty-three years it has also been effective in institutionalizing and well organizing the Communication Ministry. Under the propaganda Chief Bereket Simon the ministry has been tirelessly working like a beast deluding and deceiving Ethiopians in an attempt to protect TPLF’s interest while betraying that of the nation. Bereket’s repeated denial of Meles’s death; his denial of the election 2005 loss; his denial of the crossing of the Ethiopian troops in to Somalia; his adamant claim that Badme was awarded to Ethiopia in the Algiers peace agreement when the reality is otherwise are some of his many landmark accomplishments.

The perils of outsourcing the fight for freedom

I could have titled this piece ‘Obama and his Africa peace keepers’ but that would not be fair. Anybody with half a brain can see that I am trying to make my issue to be his problem. Excuse me just because fighting for my right is beneath my dignity there is no reason to impose on him that I am unable to do for whatever reason. Dear Mr. President we Africans are not amused! This is what appeared on The Guardian
‘According to President Obama, who announced a series of American support and initiatives generated from the summit, the US government would be creating what it called “the African Peacekeeping Rapid Response Partnership (APRRP, “A-Prep” for short), with “a new investment of $110 million per year for three to five years to build the capacity of African militaries to rapidly deploy peacekeepers in response to emerging conflict, a concept that holds powerful life-saving potential.”
It is President Obama’s lasting gift to Africa. He is helping Africa by training and arming soldiers from countries that rely on the gun to stay in power. Compared to all other abuses our continent receives from outsiders this one seems to hurt the most. It was a moment of Et tu, Obama? Is this how you pay your cousins? Sending the gun instead of bread? Sending the solder instead of the doctor? Calling them ‘Peace Keeping Force’ is that good old American trick of giving an awful thing a pretty sounding name. It was not long ago President Regan named the MX missile that was capable of turning the Soviet Union into one big parking lot the ‘Peacekeeper’.
The African peace Keeping force he is proposing conjures up visions of the condition of Latin America in the sixties, seventies and eighties that saw the procession of Military Juntas with the training and active support of the US. We are watching history repeat itself – the game is the same but the venue has changed.
We Ethiopians in the US supported Obama’s Presidency among other reasons is the hope and belief that he would forcefully bring the issue of Human Rights and Good Governance to the table. Despite his high sounding and intoxicating rhetoric he has failed to contribute positively towards the African Renaissance.
Right now my focus is not on the policy advanced by the administration that would only increase Africa’s suffering. Looking at the composition of the group nominated to be in charge I have no doubt burning, looting, and rape are considered peace keeping methods. Assembling solders from Ethiopia, Uganda, and Rwanda is like picking the City police force from the local penitentiary. I doubt any African is excited about being a continent trotting mercenary in the employ of one super power or another. What the heck we Ethiopians are good at killing each other why not kill strangers and still get paid for it is another way of looking at it. Do you think it is a win-win situation for savage Woyane?
Let us talk about Ethiopia and our reaction to the policy of coddling tyrants, insane and certified psychopathic African strongmen by the ‘Democratic’ West. We never tire pointing out the inconsistency between word and deeds by the West. Are we correct in calling them coward and selfish? Do you think they should have done more including using economic and military tools to punish dictators and human rights abusers?
I am sure all my readers agree the West has not done much to help the aspirations of non-white people to be free. In fact it can be said the West has actively worked to thwart the quest for freedom. Everybody knows that. Putting that aside do we Ethiopians believe the West to be entirely responsible for our misfortune? Or do we share the blame?
In the interest of fairness this is what policy makers in the West witness when they see their options on how to interact with our country and people. They look at the Ethiopian government and see one big pyramid scheme with a taint of ethnocentrism and a dash of thuggish behavior mixed with a spoon full of ignorance. Unfortunate for us they also get to notice how the population both at home and in the Diaspora react to such abuse and mis-use of power. The Western policy maker gets to see as we really are-warts and all.
I am not going thru a laundry list of the crimes of the TPLF or their lack of empathy and their capacity for unsatisfiable greed. I am sure Western Policy makers are aware of Woyane’s sick state of mind. Thanks to Wiki leaks we are today sure the US knows where all the skeletons are buried. Time will tell. Anyway let us not worry about outsiders.
What else do you think they see? They see a Diaspora that fled Ethiopia through different means and in the process of rebuilding in foreign lands. They also notice the same Diaspora that has become the cash cow of the government that is still practicing the policy of displacement that made them flee their homeland. The western policy maker observes the Diaspora to be a primary contributor to the welfare of the Woyane regime.
What are the ways the Diaspora help the TPLF Government to rule with an iron fist and abuse our people and country? The Diaspora money is cash with no strings attached. The Diaspora is a major player in the condominium building process on land leased from Woyane owners. The Diaspora is a sure market for Ethiopian Airlines. The Diasporas contribution lubricates the Woyane cash need – the lease scam is used to corrupt the civil servant, the building frenzy keep EFFORT floating and Ethiopian Airlines is a Woyane taxi and cash cow with plenty of fringe benefits doled out by TPLF based on ones’ ethnic origin.
Today the Diaspora can dine on injera that’s is made in Ethiopia and flown packed in plastic to the USA. It is no surprise to see Ethiopian owned dining and entertainment establishments here in the US stock their bars with Woyane controlled Brewery and its Woyane supply chain, cook our food with spices from home imported by Woyane business men (always in the background) and swear by butter and grain brought in container ships all facilitated by the ruling group in one way or another. They export those basic necessities to amass dollars that in turn finds its way out of the country to be deposited in savings or buy Real Estate with cash all over the world, especially here in the US. We have the list.
Diaspora can dine on injera
This behavior is definitely not good or end good for all involved. How we got into this is part of our history. We are not the first one to fall on hard times nor will we be the last. Right now our concern is how to climb out of the deep hole we have dug for ourselves. We totally do not want to insistently dwell on the past and relive our mistakes or endlessly recount the many ways Woyane’ are evil. No sir we want to about talk what we can do in response.
The last few years activists and community organizers allocated plenty of time, cash and other resources to closely work with Politicians, community leaders and other decision makers in the West to bring change at home. We are proud to make Human Right in Ethiopia the discussion in the halls of the US Congress and European Union. Our country will always remember all those brave Ethiopians that stood with their people despite extreme heat and freezing cold all over the world. It is safe to say that our effort has at times tamed the savage regime.
Our effort has shown promise at times but it is becoming obvious that it never is a game changer. It is our problem and we are the only ones that can solve it to our satisfaction. When solution is imposed or incubated by outsiders it never lasts long and one is back to the drawing board within a short time. Logic dictates that we devise a way to do the job ourselves. Once outsiders see that we are trying I am sure they will be happy to help because no one is loved and worshiped more than a winner.
The solution to our problem is all around us. We learn from those that fought for freedom before us. I know it is our second time around but I wouldn’t mention that if I were you. The American Revolution started by dumping English tea in Boston harbor. The colonies were refusing to pay taxes without consent and the rest is history.
Ever since then history book is full of wars, civil wars, civil strife and civil unrest where people fought to be free. That is what we are doing now. Fighting to be free once again. Finishing the job that started over fifty years ago.
The answer is very simple in the face of it but very difficult in the implementation. Normally humans act based on selfish interest. But there are times due to circumstances we act in ways that is hurtful not only to others but ourselves. That is what is happening in Ethiopia. We the children that were lucky to leave our home and build a good life outside at times do things that end up hurting those we love while empowering the evil doers. I am sure some do it because that is what they are, morally bankrupt and weak. On the other hand there are a lot that given the fact would not hesitate to do what is morally right.
We have to strive to empower our people. Our culture, the relentless war waged against our core values by the Woyane regime is toxic but we have shown we are resilient. That is exactly the reason there are no credible grass roots organizations based on ethnicity or religion in our home land. The ones we see today (OPDO, ANDM blah blah) are the brain child of Woyane and the laughing stock of our nation.
That is the wonderful foundation we are given the opportunity to build on. Surely devising a way and convincing our people to act in self-interest is not beyond our capacity is it?
The culture of being held accountable and behaving in a responsible manner towards each other are values we have to encourage. Being aware Woyane to be the root cause of our problem, we have to have the strength and conviction to take the next logical action – avoid all dealings with Woyane. It is consciously staying away from all situations that would force us to deal with the regime or its agents unless it is of utmost importance. Marginalization of Woyane, their supporters and their products is one of the most potent weapon we possess.
Should we form an Organization, a Committee or a Chapter to organize this momentous undertaking? May be. My experience in such matters is not encouraging. On the other hand it is a good idea to come out with different ways of reaching the stake holders. Educating the people is the key to the campaign. We are able to undertake the task of education when we stop our voracious appetite to hear the evil Woyane tales and fables. Enough said.
It is not about the West. It is not about TPLF Woyane. It is all about each and every one of us. How could they have respect for us when we tolerate the abuse of our people? A few knowingly or out of ignorance participate in this feeding frenzy. (See how easy it is to get diverted?) I forgot it is not about them. The question I should answer is if I am following the program of loving Ethiopia and avoiding Woyane and associates? Nothing less nothing more. It is not about my neighbor it is about me.
What we are about to do is proven to work. Gandhi used it against the British, Martin Luther King Jr. used it against segregationists, South Africans thru ANC urged all foreigners to divest from their country and today it is widely used to force Corporations change their behavior when it gets out of line.
Indians went without salt during the salt boycott and endured, Black Americans walked miles to avoid taking the bus and won, manufacturing companies closed or reduced work hours and Black South Africans lost wages and today they enjoy freedom. To discuss whether our action will hurt our people is insane. Human life and dignity is not something to bargain with. No one is willing to serve as a slave no matter the pay. We will not serve Woyane rule under any circumstances or negotiate about servitude.
Surely going without injera, not drinking Woyane beer, not taking Ethiopian Air Lines, not building on stolen land, not sending money using Woyane agents is a sacrifice we should bear with dignity on behalf of freedom and equality. Here is a wonderful quote ‘To achieve goals you’ve never achieved before, you need to start doing things you’ve never done before’. Avoiding Woyane is a good place to start.

Agonizing to reinvent the dead horse Woyane is futile

August 23, 2014
by Teshome Debalke
Woyane is dead horse and every stooge knows it. But, like anything dead the real and imagined memory lingers long after from letting it go. For those that benefited and built their life around its criminality it is difficult to let go than others that don’t know any better. Therefore, coming up with all kinds of excuses to hang on to the dead is expected.Woyane is dead horse
Naturally, goodwill of any entity long gone would keep people going in the human experience. But, Woyane has none; driven by the ideology of Apartheid, the economy of extortion, the rule of terror and the dialog of deceit, noting could be worthless than that.
Under such awful record is where the stooges are agonizing to resurrect and reinvent the dead Woyane and, it is not pretty sight. What is even more comical is their audacity to recreate it into something different altogether using the same old methods.
This is where human nature gets ugly beyond return to miss the opportunity of atonement. The inability to accept reality is time tested human behavior to the bottom and, the stooges of Woyane are a classic example.
Let’s not celebrate too much on expenses of the stooges. We all have the moment of illusion at one time or another in life. But, once we see reality hits home we won’t make a jack ass out of ourselves.
But, Woyane stooges keep pushing the envelope stuck with the dead horse to nowhere. Instead of abandoning illusion for the reality they keep attempting to resurrect or reinvent the dead to something else that it is not.
That my people isn’t normal state of mind even for stooges of any dictatorship.
Quite frankly, I don’t think people know what Woyane injects its stooges to behave the way they do but, it is not funny and we must prepare ourselves for the worst.
The fact the masterminds of ethnic Apartheid calling our people terrorists from their hidings is a good indication the stooges are in a state of denial of the reality to keep riding a dead horse. The fact the officials are hiding from the public whispering with imaginary Al-Qaida or with the ghost of their dead leader is an indication they are in the illusion of living in the afterlife. The fact they believe anything they are told as the holy truth is an indication their brain is wired with Apartheid ideology and the trickledown economics of corruption. The fact the stooges trumpeting Hi-ha and dance around the dead horse on the Media is another indication of bubbling head working its tricks not to accept the reality with grace.
I wish there was easy way for the stooges face reality in their bubbling head. It is like living in a sand castle and crying foul when they wake up in a pile of dirt. The 19th century British poet and scholar A.E. Housman put it best when he said ‘The house of delusions is cheap to build but drafty to live in’.
Drafty it is, and the last thing the stooges should do is agonize over when reality slaps the devil out of them on something that was doomed from the start. Congregating with their bubble head comrades to find an easy way out of the reality won’t help either. As the Arab proverb says ‘Lying and stealing are next-door neighbors’ or as our own proverb says ‘አባቱ ዳኛ ልጁ ቀማኛ’. Most hopelessly, blaming others in a make-believe propaganda is a poor excuse to nowhere. In short, any way you shake it or bake it Woyane is a dead horse that need quick and unceremonious burial to move on.
I know…I know it is hard to swallow when decades of living in a bubble comes back to bite you on the ass. But it beats living with the poison, and the possibility of honest and honorable life.
By the way, the stooges of Woyane shouldn’t feel lonely in a world of bubble heads. Most of Africa is full of stooges like them. That is why most Africa is a laughing stock and the basket case of the world. Like them, the best bubble head stooges of dictatorships can come up with is recycle begging and stealing to call it growth and transformation.
Therefore, every time they open their mouth to insult our intelligence remember, It doesn’t even require fake diploma to understand no nation grow and transform by begging and stealing. Thus, facing the reality: Woyane is nothing but professional beggar and a thief with no honor or goodwill is the first step in the right direction. As the Indian proverb says ‘A thief is a thief, whether he steals a diamond or a cucumber’. Better yet, the German proverb says ‘set a beggar on horseback, and he’ll outride the Devil’.
What I say is not a political statement or an insult, it is the reality. I am simply passing on the message. Agonizing to label me terrorist, anti this-and-that or kidnap and jail me is not going to change the reality nor revive a dead horse into something worthy.
Therefore, my advice to the stooges, particularly the Media operators is simple. There is no honor serving or apologizing for Woyane except riding on a dead horse to nowhere. The truth is the only salvation for the stooges. As Mark Twain ‘said, ‘if you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything’.
If you can’t handle the truth; you have a vested interest on a dead horse to insult and terrorize your way out of the reality. The only hope is living in hiding with stolen money a life of a fugitive.
Speaking of stolen money, the bible says ‘stolen bread tastes sweet, but it turns to gravel in the mouth’. That is preciously why Woyane stooges speak with both side of their mouth. Surprisingly, the big thieves are hiding while the little thieves are screaming the loudest.
As the Swahili proverb says ‘the company of a thief is a thief. Therefore, when you see two or more stooges come together to talk about anything ask; what good would a summit of thieves besides planning the next heist?
Watching the online Media lately, I can’t help notice the agony the stooges go through to make-believe of their heist and find good distractions from the reality. The long buried ‘dear leader’ along war drum with Eritrea is back. The last distractions (the imaginary Grand Ethiopian Renascence Dam and Growth Transformation plan) that brought out all kinds of pseudo PHDs from the woodwork is no longer useful replaced by the dead tyrant’s legacy and war with Eritrea. The aim is to change the narrative from the ongoing discussions and mobilizations of Ethiopians to oust Woyane. Closer look on the usual Medias down playing the reality on the ground into entertaining the new detractions will intensify.
The agony the stooges go through to cover up the crimes of Woyane to preserve the distractive force is admirable. As irrational as it may look for many, such nonsensical dedication that requires predisposition to embrace criminality make it happen, criminality rules.
Don’t blame the messengers or those that pay the ultimate price to fight criminality but those that agonize over how to make everyone criminal to make Woyane look good.

VOA Amharic in crisis over distortion scandal

August 22, 2014
by Dawit Ashenafi
(Addis Voice) – Two staff members of the Voice of America, Horn of Africa section, have recently attracted the attention of EthiopiansPeter Heinlein and Henok Semaezer Fenteacross the world. Henok Semaeger Fente and Peter Heinlein are not strangers to internal and external complaints. But the fresh allegations both are facing over an unverified, distorted and false story full of inaccuracies and dubious quotes aired in Amharic on August 12 have undoubtedly dented the credibility and reliability of VOA as a media institution.
The story appeared to be aimed at discrediting in one shot three Ethiopian voices, activist and journalist Abebe Gellaw, the Ethiopian Satellite TV and Radio and the Global Alliance for the Rights of Ethiopians (GARE). But the VOA journalists never spent a few minutes to investigate the matter before discrediting and killing an important story. As a result of this stranger-than-fiction case, Ethiopian activists around the world are planning to launch a campaign to vent out their outrage. The first protest rally, which will also call out VOA to clean its house and restore its credibility, is planned for August 25th in front of the the State Department in Washington D.C.

Facts and fictions

On July 23, journalist Abebe published an exclusive story: “Hailemariam humiliated as university revokes honor”. It was picked up by major Ethiopian media outlets. ESAT Radio and TV also gave it extensive coverage based on the facts and information available. The story in English, which was republished by several Ethiopian websites and blogs including Addis Voice, reads:
“Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn faced a stinging humiliation as Azusa Pacific University (APU), whose motto is “God First”, has withdrawn an honor it had already bestowed on him. The university administration had to reverse its decision to honor Mr. Desalegn in light of gross human rights violations in Ethiopia being perpetrated by the regime he serves.
“The administration of the American evangelical university made the decision in an emergency meeting last Friday after this reporter raised a number of critical questions on whether honoring a human rights violator was consistent with APU’s core values and motto. The Global Alliance for the Rights of Ethiopians (GARE) also wrote a protest letter highlighting gross human rights violations being perpetrated by Mr. Desalegn and the TPLF-led regime he is serving.”
Abebe, who exposed the secret honorary ceremony, wrote the news after a thorough investigation. He quoted two APU sources in the story, an anonymous source and an APU spokesperson.
“Rachel White, APU’s Assistant Director of External Relations, confirmed exclusively to this reporter that the university has withdrawn the honor and cancelled the ceremony which was planned to honor him at APU’s Los Angeles campus.
“I can confirm that the event has been cancelled. The university evaluated current developments in Ethiopia including the latest U.S. State Department Human Rights Report,” she said. She also indicated that the recent high court decision to file terrorism charges against Zone9 bloggers and journalists was also one of the factors considered for the cancellation of the event to honor Mr. Desalegn.
“Nothing is as important as our motto God First. Any decisions we make have to be consistent with our motto and core values,” White noted. She also pointed out that respect for human rights is very important for the university. It is now confirmed that Hailemariam cancelled his trip to Los Angeles after the university communicated to him its decision to cancel the honoring ceremony.”
According to a university source, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to give a statement on behalf of the university, APU’s administration unanimously agreed to withdraw the honor for Mr.Desalegn, whom it found to be an unsuitable honoree after evaluating not only the disturbing human rights situation in Ethiopia but also the potential negative publicity that the event was likely to generate. “It was a wise and timely decision, as the university was likely to face backlash if it publicly honored a human rights violator,” the source said. [Full story]

Cowboy journalism at VOA

Three weeks later, Fente, who has already been accused of distorting two previous stories related to Gellaw, aired a new version that claimed that the original news report was false. But it uses a dubiously conflicting quote from White. On the one hand she contradicts the key fact. On the other hand she was reported to have said that Abebe quoted her accurately.
During the Africa Leaders Summit in the United States, the California-based Azusa Pacific University had organized an honorary award for Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. Journalist Abebe Gellaw of Addis Voice had reported that the university’s decision to honor the Prime Minister was reversed because of the protest of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Ethiopians (GARE) and that of himself. Having talked to Rachel White, the spokesperson of Azusa Pacific University, our desk was able to confirm that the Prime Minister received a degree after completing his studies from the university. She said: [I quote] “Because he is the first leader of a country who graduated from our university, we had extended an invitation to honor him. But the Prime Minister phoned and told to us he could not attend the ceremony. As he explained that he had to return to Ethiopia, the event was cancelled.”
[Quote] “During that time, Abebe Gellaw called me and we had an interview. His report that quoted me was accurate. However, he has drawn his own conclusion in the article. In addition, he claimed in the article that we caved to his pressure. This is totally false,” she said.
In his protest letter [to the university] objecting to the decision of this educational institution, Abebe Gellaw said that under the leadership of the Prime Minister the Ethiopian government commits extrajudicial killings, imprisonments, beatings and corruption.
[Extract from Abebe’s forthcoming detailed report on the issue: “Lies, distortions and fabrications in the Voice of America]
When Abebe called Fente to complain and express his concern, he reportedly hung up the phone on him without talking to him. But Abebe said that he had a tense and lengthy conversation with Heinlein, who referred to White as the undisputed authority, despite the fact that she is a public relations officer promoting and protecting the image of APU. Even if that is the case, the issue was the absence of her voice and the lack of accuracy, verification, balance, objectivity and fairness of the story, contrary to what the VOA Charter and Journalistic Code require. White also declined to confirm or validate the VOA story.
In an email he sent to Heinlein on August 17, Abebe highlighted the inaccuracies and distortions in the contentious VOA story as follows:
1. “Journalist Abebe Gellaw of Addis Voice had reported that the university’s decision to honor the Prime Minister was reversed because of the protest of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Ethiopians (GARE) and that of himself.” [My story never says that the decision was reversed because of my pressure and that of GARE. It only mentions the fact that I posed and followed up eight critical questions and GARE sent a protest letter about the honoring ceremony. There was also plan to organize a protest rally at APU LA campus.]
2. “The Prime Minister phoned and told to us he could not attend the ceremony. As he explained that he had to return to Ethiopia, the event was cancelled.”
[The unverified reason mentioned as the cancellation of the event is totally inaccurate. The quote from Ms. Rachel White is dubious because it contradicts her public statements on the issue.]
3. “As he explained that he had to return to Ethiopia, the event was cancelled.” [How can the PM return to Ethiopia before he came to the U.S.? The APU event was slated for July 31st. He came to the U.S. on August 4, 2014 according to official government channels.] See Walta Information
4. “During that time, Abebe Gellaw called me and we had an interview.” [In fact, it was a lengthy process and I have contacted numerous sources. I first contacted APU on July 15. Called and emailed Ms. White numerous times to get answers to the eight questions I submitted in an email upon her request. She emailed me on July 19 to let me know that the event was cancelled. That was followed by a phone call from her on July 20 in which she explained to me why the university administration decided to cancel the event. The same day my other sources also confirmed and gave me the details I wanted to find out. On July 22, I called her again seeking clarifications. I learned that APU did not want to give details in writing. So it has not formally issued any statements on the issue.]
5. “However, he has drawn his own conclusion in his the piece.”
[Because Ms. White was not my only source, I did not draw any conclusions from her words. Even if that is the case, this is not something that is a sufficient reason for VOA journalists to declare such a politically sensitive story false unless it has an ulterior motive.]
6. “In addition, he claimed in the article that we caved to his pressure. This is totally false.” [I never claimed that in my story. It is false.]
7. “In his protest letter [to the university] objecting to the decision of this educational institution, Abebe Gellaw said that under the leadership of Prime Minister the Ethiopian government commits extrajudicial killings, imprisonments, beatings and corruption.” [This is a total fabrication! I have never written a single letter of protest to APU.]

Dubious interview

It is now confirmed that Henlein was the one who “interviewed” White. But the APU PR officer has refused to acknowledge or confirm the quotes attributed to her. Pressed why he did not record her voice, which is the most important material for a radio broadcast, he reportedly claimed that she did not want to be on tape. That totally makes the whole VOA effort questionable. If she did not want to be on tape that means the “interview” was off the record. But Abebe, whom Heinlein and Fente tried to discredit in a joint effort has produced two consistent voice recordings, one with himself and another one with a D.C.-based community radio in which she repeated the exact statement Gellaw quoted in his story.
Heinlein could not present any evidence whatsoever, voice or text that can show that he had indeed interviewed her for a story. Fente also quoted a fabricated protest letter Abebe was said to have written. But it has now been proven that he never wrote a protest letter to the university. A protest letter was only written by the Global Alliance for the Rights of Ethiopians (GARE) and was signed by its LA-based community organizer Dagnachew Teshome. Upon White’s request, Abebe emailed eight questions along with documents including the annual State Department Human Rights Report on Ethiopia. The questions and documents were considered in an emergency meeting that the university administration held to re-evaluate the honor and made a decision to revoke the honor all together.
White has so far declined to confirm VOA’s report and the quote attributed to her. Her recorded statements clearly detail the reasons why the university administration decided to cancel the event and revoke the honor. Nonetheless, VOA’s single-source story remains totally dubious, unverified, unfair and malicious. The VOA Journalistic Code clearly stipulates: “VOA news and programming must be rigorously sourced and verified. VOA normally requires a minimum of two independent (non-VOA) sources before any news writer, background writer, political affairs writer, correspondent, or stringer may broadcast information as fact in any language.”
The legally mandated VOA Charter was signed into law on July 12, 1976, by President Gerald Ford. It clearly stipulates: “VOA will serve as a consistently reliable and authoritative source of news. VOA news will be accurate, objective, and comprehensive.” The allegations the two are facing over this distorted story they jointly produced and broadcast to Ethiopia and around the world is extremely serious that needs to be investigated thoroughly as it is a flagrant violation of the Charter.
In spite of the fact that the producers were advised to talk to Abebe about his exclusive story, Fente did not make any effort to do so. The managing editor, Tizta Belachew, also compounded the problem by approving the single-source biased and distorted story for broadcast without proper editorial oversight.
According to multiple VOA insiders, Heinlein, the Horn of Africa Chief, is currently facing internal complaints from his own colleagues including Tizta Belachew for a pathetic habit of lying. They alleged that his habit of telling lies and fibs constantly makes it difficult for them to work under his supervision. This strange allegation seems consistent with the dubious nature of his “interview” with the spokesperson of APU.
Some of his colleagues also alleged, in another complaint, that they cannot work with him because of his oppressive managerial style to the point of denying them their basic freedom to do their work without undue interference. A couple of VOA Amharic veterans are also complaining that he discriminates them on grounds of age. Under U.S. law, age discrimination is as illegal as racial discrimination. The serious complaints against Heinlein, which appear much stranger than fiction, are currently being reviewed by VOA Africa section heads.
In addition to that, former Ministre D’etat of Communications Affairs has alleged recently on ESAT radio that when Heinlein was a correspondent in Ethiopia, he advised the Ethiopian government to take tougher action against his own colleagues based in VOA’s headquarters in Washington D.C. Another prominent Ethiopian, who wants to remain anonymous, has also come forward with a damning allegation that Heinlein fabricated a damaging story and filed it for VOA from Addis Ababa that seriously caused him serious harm and distress. According to the prominent figure, Heinlein made up an announcement without even speaking to him. If called to testify, he is willing to speak about the serious incident that had negatively affected him.
Among Ethiopian Diaspora activists especially in Washington D.C. Fente is an outcast. They have repeatedly accused him of deliberate distortions. A simple Google search can vividly reveal the controversies on his reporting style. Abebe Gellaw had also lodged an official complaint on his reporting which tried to distort another sensitive story that concerned me. He now wants a review of that investigation as he has sufficient ground to suspect tampering with the outcome on the investigation.
Some activists had even launched a change.com petition to “stop Fente’s biased reporting” in June 2012. Their target was to get 500 signatures, but 1024 Ethiopians signed up within a few days. Another petition is now in the making. [Petition]
Despite the public uproar and immediate complaints by Abebe, VOA Horn of Africa, headed by Heinlein, has not even acknowledged its blunders let alone retracting the story and humbly apologize to the millions of its listeners that it misinformed in good time. VOA Amharic as well as the entire Horn of Africa Section are clearly facing leadership crisis. The VOA Horn of Africa ship is sailing in a stormy sea commandeered by a captain who is evidently irresponsible, incompetent and negligent, to say the least.
Abebe says that those who have united to maliciously cause harm and damage have lost their own battle. “Whatever the case, this is a pure case of abuse of power. They owe a sincere apology to the people of Ethiopia for this Distortion-gate, a blatant misinformation campaign using VOA as a weapon of distortion.”

Demonstration in Washington DC on Monday August 25th, 2014

August 21, 2014
Our people are under siege due to Woyane’s barbaric actions emanating from the internal crisis of ruling junta. The attacks on journalists, human right activists and religious and political leaders in particular and the people in general have been intensified. The heads of the minority ruling clique have been irresponsibly spreading false information both inside and outside Ethiopia. Pro-Woyane opportunists are also engaged in misinformation and have been boldly showing their disrespect towards the people. What VOA did was case in point.
A rally to protest against the above misdeeds related issues of the fascistic regime is scheduled to be held in front of the State Department.

Nine journalists and bloggers still held arbitrarily

August 21, 2014
(Reporters Without Borders) – Three journalists and six bloggers who have been held for the past five months were denied bail by a Three journalists and six bloggers who have been held for the past five months in Ethiopiafederal court in Addis Ababa yesterday after the prosecution argued that article 3 of the 2009 anti-terrorism law, under which they are detained, precludes release on bail.
The defence said article 3’s bail prohibition does not apply because none of them has been individually charged with a specific crime under the anti-terrorism law. The defence also argued that article 3 violates the constitutional guarantee of the right to release on bail.
The three journalists are Tesfalem Waldyes, Edom Kasaye and Asmamaw Hailegiorgis, and the six bloggers – all members of the Zone 9 collective – are Atnaf Berhane, Mahlet Fantahun, Befekadu Hailu, Abel Wabella, Natnail Feleke and Zelalem Kibret. One of the collective’s co-founders, Soliyana Shimelis, is being prosecuted in absentia.
The Ethiopian government is clearly trying to gag the media,” said Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Christophe Deloire. “These three journalists and nine bloggers have been held for nearly five months without being given the least guarantee of due process. The prosecution still has not said what precisely they are supposed to have done to justify the charges. We call for their immediate release because they have no place being in prison.
The prosecution accused them on 17 July of “organizing themselves into covert sub-groups to overthrow the government by contacting and receiving finance and training from two designated terrorist groups” – the US-based opposition group Ginbot 7 and the separatist Oromo Liberation Front (OLF). They are facing up to 15 years in prison under the anti-terrorism law.
Restrictions on freedom of information have grown in recent months in Ethiopia, where at least six journalists are currently detained in connection with their work. A state broadcaster fired 20 employees because of their political views on 25 June, and the justice ministry announced on 5 August that it intended to bring criminal charges against six news publications for “encouraging terrorism and endangering national security.”
Ethiopia is ranked 143rd out of 180 countries in the 2014 Reporters Without Borders press freedom index.

New charges against Ethiopian publications further diminish critical voices

August 20, 2014
(CPJ) – Five independent magazines and a weekly newspaper have been charged by Ethiopia’s Justice Ministry, a move that may add to the
Addis Guday magazine
Addis Guday magazine is among the publications charged. (Addis Guday)
long lists of shuttered publications and Ethiopian journalists in exile. In a press release issued August 4, the ministry accused the journals of publishing false information, inciting violence, and undermining public confidence in the government, news reports said.
The ministry said it pressed charges after running out of patience with the publications for “encouraging radicalism and terrorism.” The state broadcaster aired the ministry’s announcement, but none of the publications received the charge sheet, local journalists told me. The six independent publications are Afro Times, a weekly newspaper, and magazines Addis Guday, Enku, FactJano, and Lomi. All arepopular alternatives to the state-run press, which espouses anincreasingly positive narrative. Local journalists and news reports said the charges could be a way for the ruling party to silence critics ahead of elections expected in May 2015.
Repeated calls to the Justice Ministry and a government spokesman went unanswered.
The ministry’s charges are not unexpected. In February, the pro-government Ethiopian Press Agency, a state-controlled news wire, conducted a study analyzing the content of the publications and concluded they were responsible for inciting violence and upholding opposition viewpoints, according to local news reports. Many local journalists at the time said they feared the study would be used as a pretext to target the publications later. “It’s a strategy the government uses when they want to stop a newspaper,” Habtamu Seyoum, an editor at popular magazine Addis Guday, told me by phone. “They will prepare an article claiming that a journalist or media house should be closed. The next step is to jail or close the media house; it’s done as a sort of formality.”
The Justice Ministry’s charges reflect a trend of authorities silencing critical media. Since 2009, the government has banned or suspended at least one critical independent publication per year, according to CPJ research.
Addis Guday stopped publishing on August 9. Several staff went into exile shortly after the government announcement, fearing imminent arrest. CPJ research shows their fears are likely justified. “We had police surrounding our offices, insults printed by the government press, constant phone threats–and now [these charges]. It was just too much,” Addis Guday Deputy Editor Ibrahim Shafi told CPJ. A week before the staff members fled, police raided their offices twice in one week, ostensibly to investigate financial records, he said.
The country’s politicized justice system coupled with the ruling party’s near zero-tolerance approach to criticism has led a steady flow of journalists to flee the country. CPJ has directly assisted at least 41 journalists fleeing Ethiopia since 2009, and the total number of exiles is likely higher. Those who have fallen out of favor with authorities, whether from independent or state media, feel exile or imprisonment are their only options.
Authorities arrested another Addis Guday editor, Asmamaw Hailegeorgis, in April on terrorismcharges, and arrested photojournalist Aziza Mohamed in July on vague accusations of incitement. Ethiopian authorities have a penchant for sentencing journalists to jail after presenting charges, no matter how spurious the charges may be. Data collected from the registrar of Ethiopia’s Federal High Court suggest 95 percent of journalists accused by authorities are found guilty, according toTrialTrackerBlog.org, which publishes news about detained journalists in Ethiopia.
Lomi (“Lemon”) failed to print on August 8 and is unlikely to do so again, local journalists told me, because printers fear publishing anything that has fallen out of the ruling party’s favor. Last month, police searched Lomi‘s offices and accused the staff of working without a license, a charge they denied, local journalists said.
According to the state-run Addis Admas, all but one of the magazines failed to publish recently.
A court in the capital, Addis Ababa, summoned the general managers of three publications–Fact,Addis Guday, and Lomi–on August 13, but only the general manager of Lomi appeared, according to news reports. Local journalists told CPJ they expect the other three publications to be summoned to court soon.
CPJ was not able to reach journalists from Afro TimesEnkuFact, or Jano.
If these publications close down due to this latest government challenge, Ethiopia’s meager circulation of weekly independent publications–roughly 60,000 for a population of 90 million people–will decrease further. There is only one television station, run by the state, and out of five radio stations, three are staunchly pro-government. The state-run telecommunications company is the sole Internet service provider for a country with the second lowest Internet penetration rates in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the International Telecommunication Union. With limited independent voices, voters’ access to critical news sources and informed debate ahead of Ethiopia’s May 2015 elections may be negligible. The ruling party would probably not want it any other way.
